Unit3- Task 1- Create a proposal for a media product

Task 1- Create a proposal for a media product

Learning Outcome 1: Be able to create a proposal with sample materials for an original media product to a client brief. (P1,P2&M1)

Objective
I am proposing to have a new unique and individual music magazine created to capture a certain target audience as I believe there is a gap in the market for my magazine idea. I am proposing to create a magazine about the music scene in north London as there are no current magazines like this one.

Name of magazine and reason for choice
I am going to call my magazine “NL Vibes” which stands for North London Vibes because it connotes what the magazine is about and where it will be based. I believe this shows the audience that this magazine is going to be based around the North London area. I chose to display the logo on a brick wall in North London because their are a lot of Grime artists who grew up in this area and perform their music there.

Font Styles

  • NL Vibes
  • NL Vibes
  • NL Vibes
  • NL Vibes
  • Nl Vibes

These are a few ideas for the type of fonts i have considered to use when writing articles in my magazine. I have tried to include both simple and effective fonts as well as some that are quite experimental and look different and are unconventional from what you may see in other music magazines.

Focus of first issue
The first issue is going to be focused on how this idea came to fruition and let the target audience get to know about us. Also, it is going to feature articles about artists performing in the North London area currently and what is going on with them currently and have them talk to us about what their working on and when it is coming out.

Unique qualities my group possess to bring this magazine to fruition
I have researched the industry for a certain gap in the market and I believe we have found it. I am focusing on the Grime music industry because this type of music is performed a lot in this area. I believe our idea is innovative and that the target audience is going to enjoy our editions because I aim to keep them up to date with all things Grime music related in the North London area. I intend to display interviews from new up and coming Grime artists and find out their story and we aim to keep our audience updated with all things Grime related.

Potential sources of advertising
This magazine will feature ads inside the magazine with some being funded by companies that want to get their products more aware to the similar target audiences that we are targeting, this way we both benefit from the magazine being made. Also, by some sold subscriptions to people that prefer to have the magazine delivered to their home.

What type of articles do I anticipate for my magazine?
I will be talking about the current music market in North London and the big names that have made it in the Grime music industry. Also, I will be talking about new up and coming artists and how they made it to where they are today.

What/who is the competition for our magazine
Other magazine brands with the same idea and similar intentions to promote what the North London music scene is shaping up to be and how rapidly Grime is becoming bigger year after year are our main competition in the current market. However, this is a very unique genre and there aren’t many magazines like this. Although there aren’t that many of the same type of magazine, it is essential that we differentiate ourselves from the competition so that we can draw in the target audience.

How is our magazine different from other magazines?
My magazine is different from others because other music magazines lack a clear focus on certain genres and usually mix and talk about all types of music whereas our magazine is strictly focused on all things to do with Grime music originating and being performed in the North London area.I will continuously try to interact with our target audience through various different platforms such as social media and to be an online presence to keep them interested and subscribed to our magazine.

Who is my target audience?
The primary target audience for our magazine is 15 to 30-year-old men and women. Specifically, our audience members are the young because we want to find out about the music and artists they listen to and why. We want to find out if the area they live in influences their choice of preferred music genre. Also if they are purchasing our magazine what is the reason for purchasing it? If it's because they listen to the Grime music primarily, I will find out who they listen to so we can write articles about their favourite artists and set up interviews with them to try and entice the consumer to become loyal customers. By interviewing some of the biggest artists from the Grime industry, we aim to pull in new and potential customers as well.

What are my audience demographics?
The audience demographics are all types of people such as; Upper Class, Upper middle class, Middle class people, Lower middle class people, Skilled working class people and Working class people. Areas in North London vary so different people from different areas in North London will listen to different types of music. Some will not be for everyone’s taste, only a certain audience will like Grime. Some people will listen to many types of genres whereas others will only listen to one preferred genre.

What is my assumptions about the audience?
I assume that our magazine will instantly grab the attention of our target audience, whether they see it from an advertisement online or if they see it on the shelf, I believe that it will have an impact on them when they see it and it will make them want to purchase it. I also assume that they will become loyal customers and continuously want purchase this item. I aim to create the best possible first issue to ensure that this becomes inevitable. My assumption and expectation of the target audience is that they will spread the word of my new magazine to other people they know that like the Grime genre and go to see the artists that may feature in the magazine and will want to read about them. This will increase revenue made by the company with the more people knowing about the product.

What problems do i foresee? And how do i plan to overcome them?
Although I see that there is a gap in the market for our magazine, there are a few but not many similar magazines to it so influencing some of the people that already purchase the other magazines may prove tough because they may be loyal customers. Should the majority of people who buy this type of magazine be one-off or potential customers, I will try to entice them to becoming loyal customers to our brand by offering special loyalty bonuses that they accumulate over time with their monthly subscriptions. I will also offer special packages with goods to those who subscribe and they will be entered into our monthly competition where they could potentially win concert tickets.

What will the magazine layout be like?
The front cover will contain the typical codes and conventions such as; cover lines, main image, master head, graphic features and images, skyline, strap line and taglines. I intend to make the issue number visible in the top left corner next to the skyline with the masthead going along the top of the page just below. Overlapping the masthead i envisage the main image which covers the majority of the page. Both on the left and right sides of the front cover will be cover lines that will try and draw readers in and potential interested customers along with graphic features. In the top right corner i imagine their to be a pug offering a free sample inside if you purchase of the magazine. Finally i figure their to be a price of the magazine in the bottom right corner just above the barcode. The double page spreads will have article content written in columns with headings and subheadings included and standing out so the audience know what each topic and page is about. They will also have images of the artist that is being spoken about in the article with a quote they have said from the interview we would have done with them or a famous quote from one of the songs they have sung and previously released.

Sketched Layouts and Detailed hand drawn versions of magazine pages

Which distribution and marketing method will be used and why?
Social media and online presence will be used to our advantage because people are interested in learning by providing teaser content on a Facebook page or via a Twitter account. We will Include contests, quizzes and free subscription offers. We will also Add Facebook "Like," Twitter and Google+ buttons to our website pages, specifically those that contain interesting articles people might be likely to share with friends. This is a great way to raise awareness of our product know because the population of our target audience that is on social media is huge.

Image result for grime music magazine

The magazine on the left is a good representation of what i am aiming to recreate in my own unique way. This magazine is direct and straight to the point of showing what it is about by implementing the genre of the magazine as the masthead. It has interviews with some of the biggest names from this area of music so it is purely focused on the artists within this industry. The front cover follows all the typical codes and conventions that are expected to feature. The magazine on the right is the way i would like my magazine front cover to be laid out. it has a clear masthead with a main image at the heart of it and includes different cover lines to let the target audience know what to expect to read inside.
